Music Video: Pokemon – Spinning Around That Base

Music: Spinning Around That Base

Original Music: All About That Bass

Parody Artist: NateWantsToBattle

Original Artist: Meghan Trainor

As a complete Otaku as this blog would suggest that I am, one can only guess that I personally would find this a classic parody of All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor. But to make it even more LOL sort of a moment, I have to get this out in the open…..

I’ll be the first to admit….

Admit that I have a problem.

A SERIOUS problem.

What’s that problem?

I’m a PokéHolic.

That’s right – I’m addicted. To Pokémon.

Ever since I found out about Pokémon back in November 1998 upon immigrating to United States, I’ve always loved watching Pokémon on television. What’s more? Few years after, I asked my parents for my very first Game Boy Color and my very first Pokémon game for Christmas because that’s all I ever wanted – To play Pokémon. And for anyone that knows and remembers as well as I do from having played Pokemon Gold and/or Silver, they should know very well that there is a town in the game called Mahogany Town. And in that town, there is a large store where, in the basement of the building, Team Rocket (the bad guys of the Pokémon series) uses as their secret hide out.

And in the animated Pokémon series itself, three Team Rocket members – Jesse, James, and Meowth (female, male, and a male talking Pokémon in its respective order) – are well known to attempt in stealing the main character Ash’s partner, Pikachu, at all times but always with much fail.

And NateWantsToBattle did a brilliant job on his YouTube channel by incorporating both the animated Pokémon series AND the Pokemon Silver and Gold games in his parody of All About That Bass, which he entitled for this music video Spinning Around That Base. But to make his music video even more interesting, he doesn’t tell the story in the point of view of the protagonist. Instead, he tells the story in the view point of the antagonists – the Team Rocket! And having to see the story in the Team Rocket’s point of view really does make a PokéHolic like myself think – Does Giovanni really threaten his employees (the Team Rocket members) that they’ll be swimming with the Magikarps (the carp-like fish looking water type Pokémon’s) every night if they don’t bring him something nice like Ash’s Pikachu? Or is it just a joke to make fun of Giovanni’s character because of how he’s been portrayed in the game the few times he shows up and all because he’s the main head and the founder, as well as leader, of the Team Rocket organization?

The video may have been plain in sense of background being only black, but how it was edited was very well done with quick change of clips here and there throughout the video, and the recording of the music was great as well! To make it better, the lyrics were just extremely well written. To come up with a good parody like this isn’t always the easiest thing on earth, but when it came to Spinning Around That Base, NateWantsToBattle did a great job!

From PokéHolic, over and out until next time!
