[Broadway Friday] Wicked

Show: Wicked

Type: Broadway Musical

Welcome welcome to Broadway Friday!

For this week, the table is turned to none other than Wicked!

What’s Wicked? Good question!

If you know the story of Wizard of Oz, you should be familiar with the fact that there are two witches in the world of Oz! One with is known as the Good Witch, who also goes by the name of Galinda or Glinda (whichever of the two you prefer), and the other witch is known as the Wicked Witch of the West.

But the question is this – IS the Wicked Witch of the West really…… WICKED?

Wicked show takes on a spin on showing Wicked Witch of the West’s life to show exactly how wicked she truly is, and it’s not something that everyone would probably expecting. In other words, if you have watched the movie Maleficent, it’s very much so like that. It shows just exactly how wicked she is, meaning Wicked Witch of the West, who in this story you’ll find out is actually named Elphaba.

Even before Elphaba was born, the story that Glinda the Good Witch tells a story of a woman. A married woman with a husband who was a governor of Munchkinland, and she was having an affair with another man. The lover gave her some sort of a drink, and when the woman goes into pregnancy, the husband becomes thrilled. That is until the day of the labor comes, and their child came out with the baby’s skin being green from head to toe. The child’s father, the husband, becomes disgusted by the sight of his own daughter and has another go at having a child. The problem is that the second child had come out with her legs all tangled up, leaving the baby to be paralyzed from waist down, and the mother dies from labor. Ever since, the father blames his first born child, who later on grows up to be Elphaba.

Because of how horrendous Elphaba looks, everyone is terrified of her. The only ones who can seem to stand her are her father and her sister, Nessarose, who Elphaba calls Nessa for short. Even though Elphaba is tolerated to a certain degree by her family, even they are terrified of her for the amount of magic is holds in the palms of her hands that she can’t seem to control. So when she and Nessa enrolls into Shiz University, where Elphaba and Galinda (Glinda) meet for the first time. Of course, Glinda is the popular girl in school where as Elphaba is the neglected and hated student, the outcast, of the school. And because of this, the two tend to collide heads on the frequent occasion, but one event changes everything. The high held up princess like student and the lowly of a shunned student become friends because of one event at the school, and all because of one interaction that comes out of it. Before anyone knows it, the two go from being complete enemies to being the best of the best friends that anyone can ever see.

What’s that one event?

And what’s that one interaction that the two had?

All to bring the two complete opposites close to becoming best friends?
