Knock Out Saturday!

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the first time Knock Out Saturday here on The Otaku World!

Today’s game spotlight goes to MapleStory – an online game of MMORPG made by Nexon, a group that has made several other handful of popular MMORPG’s!

For those of you that don’t know, Nexon is a South Korean gaming company, and their games – especially MapleStory – are one of the most addicting games around! And as someone who loves to play games, even I get so addicted to their MapleStory far more than Pokemon (which actually says quite a lot considering I am a major PokeHolic) that I usually end up playing this game 10 to 12 hours if not more straight through without rest. The company itself was originally found in December of 1994, and some of their games have spiraled around all over the world.

The games that have spun out from Korea and over into United States are MapleStory, Mabinogi, Comabt Arms, Vindictus, Atlantica Online, and Dragon Nest. The games first get launched in Korea and it’s usually the case that it goes over to Japan next and then followed up by United States and finishes off with Europe. But the most popular game that is played worldwide is MapleStory, something that millions (and possibly billions) of people all over the world enjoy and love playing. Some even say that it’s a game that when asked if the game has virus or not that Maple Story should not be played because it ruins lives. Not just in terms of having to waste so much time playing due to the game being so addicting, but also in terms of relationships with family due to arguments breaking out so often and anything related to that nature. Some may even say the game affects their grades in classes, which may or may not be true depending on how much of self-control one may have in terms of being able to keep away from playing game for hours on end and balance out the time between the game itself and studies.

In MapleStory game itself, there are classes and jobs that one can choose from. In total, there are essentially five different classes in total – Six if currently closed class is counted for. Those classifications are Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief, and Pirate. The sixth classification is known as Chaser, which is what the Beast Tamer is, but that class is as of currently closed off from being able to be made, but all the rest are open for making.

Of course, there are also specific types of classes that one can choose from. And those classes (which are eight in total) are Explorers, Cygnus Knights, Heroes, Resistance, Nova, Sengoku, Child of God, and Beast Tamer. Now comes the basic overview of all those characters in the MapleStory that is available for USA, which is the MapleStory Global.

In the Explorers, the jobs are divided up into:

Warrior – Those that work with things such as swords and axes

Magician – Warlocks/Magicians that work with wands and staffs

Bowman – Archers that work with bows and arrows

Thief – Ninja-like class that works with (ninja) stars and blades

Pirates – Those that work with things such as cannons and blades designed specifically for pirates

Dual Blades – Thief class that works with two blades

Cannoneer – Pirates class that works with cannons

Jett – Another Pirates class just like the Cannoneers that uses cannons as their weapons

And then there are the Cygnus Knights. There are total of five different types of jobs – five original classifications that started off in the game – present in the game. But only one of the jobs have two different jobs, one of which is the instructor for one of five classes. And the following jobs are:

Dawn Warrior – A warrior class that focuses on using pole arms and blades

Blaze Wizard – Magician/Warlock that uses fire as main means of magic and uses staffs as weapons

Wind Archer – Archers that uses bows and main means of attacks are mainly wind

Night Walker – A Thief classes that uses shadows as primary means

Thunder Breaker – A Pirate class that uses guns as weapons and elemental attack is under thunder

Mihile – A Warrior, and the instructor of the Dawn Warrior that have become available recently as a job

And then there are the Heroes class. And within the Heroes, the jobs are Aran, Evan, Mercedes, Phantom, Luminous, and Shade. The two original Heroes that started off were Aran (a Warrior) and Evan (a Warlock/Magician) jobs. But the one thing that all these jobs of the Heroes have in common is that they all have been asleep in one way or another for extremely long periods of time, but each of them have different classifications in terms of the types of class they are part of.

Aran – A Warrior that uses only Pole Arms that have been frozen in ice for a century, and uses ice and combination attacks against foes

Evan – A Magician/Warlock that uses wands and staffs as weapon, and imprinted onto a dragon’s egg and even after it hatches that Evan ends up traveling around everywhere with the dragon even after the dragon hatches

Mercedes – An Archer that has been a fairy encased within the ice for a century, and Mercedes’s weapon choices are Dual Bowguns and Magic Arrows

Phantom – A Thief classified character and Phantom’s choice of weapons are Canes and Cards whereas the abilities are to be able to copy skills from Explorer characters (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Theif, Pirates and Dual Blades), including Cannoneers, but the two of the jobs that Phantom cannot copy from are Jett and Zen (Zen being the one character that is NOT available to the US)

Luminous – A Magician/Warlock just like Evan and uses Shining Rod and Orb as choice of weapons; due to having to land the final blow on Black Mage, the main antagonist character that all jobs are commonly after in defeating, Luminous is tainted by Black Mage’s dark magic, and struggles inwardly between dark and light

Shade – A Pirate classification, and Shade’s primary choice of weapon are anything that’s a Knuckle weapon and secondary choice of weapon is Fox Marbles, whereas the Shade calls upon the spirits for assistance

Then comes the Resistance. The three that started off the Resistance group were Battle Mage, Wild Hunter, and Mechanic, and the two that joined in later on are Demon and Xenon. Battle Mage are Wizards or Magicians, and use namely staffs and wands as their weapon where as Wild Hunters are classified as archers and use arrows and bows as their main source of weapons and has even panthers as their partner to travel. Mechanic class on the other hand are exactly as they sound – They are Mechanics, riding robot suit of armour to travel and fight, and their main source of fighting tends to be same as the Pirates. And among the Resistance classification comes two other Jobs – Xenon and the Demon. Xenon is one of the special jobs that’s offered and able to be made only during special events, but this is a hybrid character that’s able to equip both the Pirate and Thief class weapons. The story behind Xenon is that he was captured by the Black Wings, the evil organization that the Resistance is trying to fight against, and turned him into part robot with his memories erased. With his memories returning, however, he is played as a character that fights against the Black Wings. As for the Demon, it can be played as either the Demon Slayer or Demon Avenger. With Demon Slayer, their strength is what’s raised high and uses mainly the warrior weapons such as the mace or the axe with Demon Aegis as its secondary equip. The Demon Avenger, unlike other characters, does not use Magic Points (MP) but a different type of points due to the fact that their attacks require something very special.

There are several more others that has been added onto the game, but that’s for you to find out and for you to enjoy! So go on and play if you dare to get addicted to one of the most popular games in the world that started in South Korea!
