Movie: Frozen

Genre: Animation

Second round of Movie Monday!

The second spotlight of the day goes to Frozen!

Just like Mulan, Frozen is not the typical, everyday princess movie. At the beginning of the movie, Elsa, the older of the two sisters, is revealed to the audience as having been born with magical power to be able to control snow and ice. By freezing the brain, the effect of the spell can be reversed into making the head believe that something else had happened by taking the spell away with perhaps a strand or two of grayish-white hair behind and to stay for good.

And that is exactly what had happened to Anna when she had gone to wake up her older sister, Elsa, to play in the middle of the night. And knowing of Elsa’s ability, Anna asks her if she wants to build a snowman just to get Elsa fully out of bed and to play. With them having such close bond as sisters, the older of the two of course decides to play with the little sister. Tragedy befalls on them when Elsa can’t keep up with how fast Anna is jumping off the snowy slopes that the blonde princess, Elsa, ends up striking the brunette, Anna, in the head. It’s due to one small incident that Elsa is forced to shut everyone out, and the only ones that she is allowed to come in contact with are her parents. Anna, on the other hand, can’t recall the accident once waking up after trolls that Elsa and Anna’s parents know and heard of helps Anna cure the icy attack to the head.

We see the two girls grow up through the use of one song, “Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?”, and even then, the two sisters meets a tragedy when they receive the news of their parents’ death when they are older. The movie then fast forwards into 3 years later when it’s time for Elsa to be crowned the Queen of Arendale, but the Coronation Day turns into a disaster when her spell begins to grow out of control from her fears of attacking, perhaps even killing, someone by accident takes her over.

It has been a common theme in the past when it came to Disney’s princess stories that true love’s kiss is what would save someone from a curse that one has, but is what Elsa has a curse that was bestowed upon her? Or is it something that she was born with?

And if it’s a curse, with the way Elsa had been pushing away everyone so that she wouldn’t bring harm to anyone, not even her own sister, who is the one to give her the true love’s kiss?

Do keep in mind that I have stated early on in the blog that Frozen isn’t like any other Disney princess movies just like Mulan was not. That having to be the case, is a true love’s kiss really something of necessity in order to save Elsa or anyone that may get effected by her ability if not already effected? Or is there something beyond the forces of nature of a true love’s kiss that can also save the day?
