Movie: I Am Legend

Genre: Drama/Sci-Fi/Thriller

Time for a third round of Movie Monday!

Our third and final round of Movie Monday of the week is another one of Will Smith’s movie – I Am Legend.

Unlike the previous two that’s been posted for today, I Am Legend is more of an apocalyptic movie in terms of vampires. Except in this movie, instead of having to call them vampire, they are known as Darkseers. The Darkseers, like Neville (who is portrayed by Will Smith), were once humans, but they have been infected by a virus that was spreading like wild fire. Neville, having to have worked for the government, was so close to getting out with his wife and kids when the aircraft that his family had boarded on crashed, leaving Neville to be all alone.

Having to reside in New York City all by himself, Neville has found ways to survive by being out during the day and trying to contact that may have survived by their own free will like he has, and locking himself away with his dog inside by night to make sure no Darkseers are able to reach him and his dog to kill them off. And when he tries to find a cure to the virus that had been going around, he tests whatever he can on the already infected rats that he keeps in cages.

His means of survival in terms of his sanity is by keeping his German shepherd dog, Sam, around and setting up mannequins around at various stores, naming every mannequin he has around, and talking to them as if he were having conversations with actual people. But it doesn’t mean that he will be able to keep his sanity forever for he knows himself that it’s just a means of escape when using the mannequins to “converse” with them.

One night, however, Neville manages to capture a female Darkseer and uses her as a test subject for cure while the alpha Darkseer, assuming that the alpha is the female Darkseer’s father, watches from afar for he is unable to approach due to being chained up. But it has reached a point where Neville and his dog has barely manages to escape from Darkseer dogs one night, and Sam, Neville’s dog, is bitten, forcing Neville to put his own dog down to its death.

No other living humans to talk to.

Darkseers after Neville and his blood.

No company, not from his own dog, to rely on any longer.

Uncertainty to whether or not there are any other survivors in the world apart from himself.

Will Neville be able to find the cure? More so, will he be able to find someone else to take the cure with them for when and if he does manage to find something to cure the disease?
