Happy TV Tuesday!
Today’s TV Tuesday featured show is Elementary, America’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes!
In Britain, they have their own portrayal of Sherlock Holmes under the name Sherlock, which airs on BBC, and with the Sherlock series, they stay true to the genders fully. Meaning with even Sherlock’s investigative partner, Dr. Watson, remains a male. However, in America’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes titled Elementary, they have played with the character of Watson as they changed Watson into a woman, who is portrayed by Lucy Liu, and even went as far as changing Dr. Watson’s name, John, into Joan to make it more fitting to the gender.
I can’t say how accurate and how true to Sherlock’s story Elementary is sticking to, but in the America’s adaptation, Sherlock Holmes is portrayed to be a drug addict, and Watson is assigned to him by Holmes’ father as a companion in order to make sure that Sherlock doesn’t fall back into his crack addiction. However, it is sticking close to the Sherlock Holmes story to the fact that he is a highly intelligent, and a detective solving crimes. Whereas in the books, he does his own investigative work, in the Elementary series, Holmes is considered to be a consultant to the New York Police Department whenever a crime that’s hard to find answers to along with the finding the criminal him- or herself comes across on the desk of the NYPD desk. On top of having to help the NYPD solve the mystery to the crime being investigated, Holmes works more than just as a consulting detective to the NYPD but also as a private investigator in order to solve any problems and crimes that people can’t seem to bring to the police or if the client feels as if they rather keep the police out of the business of their corporations.
For every companionship, however, it has been even stated in the series that companionships don’t last forever. Rather there is a time limit that’s been set between the companion and the employer of the companion. And as such, Watson’s companionship work for Sherlock would have to come to an end sooner or later, but is she falling in love with her job as a detective as well? Or will Watson leave her job as Sherlock’s companion to help others with addiction problems in need?
Mystery and crime investigation.
Thinking and logic.
Thrill for the investigations.
If you’re into logical thinking and all those criminal investigation related things, let Elementary be one of those shows that you get hooked onto for you!
