Movie: Longest Yard
Genre: Comedy
Second round of Movie Monday, and the second spotlight belongs to Longest Yard!
In this movie, Adam Sandler and Chris Rock team up as their characters are portrayed as criminals and sent to the state prison. With the Longest Yard, it’s more of the survival of the fittest when it comes to surviving in prison. But it isn’t just against one another, but against the guards as well.
Paul Crewe (Sandler) is a former NFL player that has become a disgrace for shaving some points in a game, and he gets himself drunk one night and goes for a drive with his girlfriend. Getting caught and he gets sentenced to serve three years in the Texas Federal Prison. In the prison, he meets Caretaker (Rock), and the two become friends as Caretaker soon goes around the yard to try and recruit the inmates for football team between the inmates and the guards.
As the unspoken rule within the prison walls go, the inmates are always the losers and the guards always come out the victors by end of the football game. After a bit of struggle due to even all the inmates knowing of Paul’s shaving of few points in one of his games, Paul and Caretaker manages to pull through in forming a team to practice for the game up against the guards. Knowing of the happening and with the knowledge of Paul having been a professional football player, the guards do whatever it takes to try and sabotage the inmate team, such as planting explosives in Paul’s radio and flooding the inmates’ practice field so that they won’t be able to practice in the mud. And for Paul, he takes it as nothing more than just a challenge and obstacle to get over and continues on with practices so that the inmates can get better in football to win against the guards.
How successful Caretaker and Paul gets when it comes to encouraging the inmates is one hell of a story to watch, and it’s even a greater story with all the teamwork and unity that the movie has to offer. With it all, it holds a great moral of no matter what obstacles are in the way, to leap over them and keep on going, and to never let anything stop you from achieving your goals.
The main thing with this movie is if you want to find out if the inmates actually win against the guards or not with even several personal threats that guards have to give, that’s for you as the viewers to find out by watching the movie.
